Samson Cheung Elevated to IEEE Fellow

Cheung received the honor for “contributions to multimedia data processing with application to autism interventions.”

Samson Cheung, Blazie Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been elevated to the status of IEEE Fellow, for “contributions to multimedia data processing with application to autism interventions.” IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation. Each year, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a select group of recipients for elevation to IEEE Fellow. Less than 0.1% of voting members are selected annually for this member grade elevation.

“I am very grateful for this honor recognizing my work in multimedia and autism-related technologies,” said Cheung. “This is truly a team effort from all the students in my group, collaborators on and off-campus, to my family members. I am particularly thankful for the institutional supports from the ECE department and the College of Engineering, which are crucial for interdisciplinary research projects like mine. I am looking forward to continuing this research and bringing new technologies to the broader autism community.”

Cheung has been teaching and conducting research at UK since 2004. He is a co-investigator on a $3.5 million grant NIH grant led by faculty at UC Davis for five years to develop novel video-based approaches for detection of autism risk in the first year of life. Read more here.
