The Digital Restoration Initiative (DRI), led by Department of Computer Science Professor and Chair Brent Seales, is inviting motivated undergraduates in computer science and other departments with a desire to learn to apply for its interdisciplinary “virtual unwrapping” research team.
DRI works to reveal the writing hidden on the untouchable, disintegrating pages of ancient scrolls and other damaged textual artifacts. Past student teams have participated in all aspects of the ongoing research, including developing and applying software tools and traveling to partner institutions to perform site work. DRI collaborates with well-known libraries and museums around the world, such as the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Bodleian Library in Oxford, the Institut de France in Paris, the National Library in Naples and the Israel Antiquities Authority in Jerusalem.
Participants will have the unique opportunity to apply technology across a range of disciplines; students from computer science, the humanities and data and information sciences are encouraged to apply. Writing, oral presentation and technical tutorials are a part of the program to ensure students develop valuable skills that give them a competitive advantage when entering the workforce.
