Nikiforos Stamatiadis Receives Fulbright Award

April 06, 2020

His project will develop and deliver a bicyclist and pedestrian facility design course considering bicycling in Greece

Nikiforos Stamatiadis, Raymond-Blythe Professor of Civil Engineering, has been selected for a Fulbright award to Greece. The grant is a reflection of Stamatiadis' leadership and contributions to society and is made possible through funds appropriated annually by the U.S. Congress and, in many cases, by contributions from partner countries and private parties. The Fulbright Program is devoted to increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Fulbright is the world’s largest and most diverse international educational exchange program.

Stamatiadis' project will develop and deliver a bicyclist and pedestrian facility design course considering bicycling in Greece and develop a research framework utilizing traffic simulation to address bicyclist safety through exploiting Connected Autonomous Vehicles technologies and concepts. The course will provide students with the tools to develop and design bicyclist and pedestrian facilities through a service-learning approach, i.e., a process of addressing and developing designs for a local problem identified in cooperation with local authorities. A series of lectures and seminars will be presented to both academic and professional communities in Volos and other locations in Greece.

Stamatiadis received a Fulbright award in 2016 that enabled him to teach and conduct research on transportation engineering, with a focus on highway design and safety, at the University of Catania in Catania, Italy.
