Guigen Zhang Receives New Patent

The patent is titled, “Electrical Double Layer in Nanopores for Detection and Identification of Molecules and Submolecular Units.”

Guigen Zhang, Professor and F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Chair in the F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), received a new patent (US 10,883,962 B2) as the lead inventor from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on January 5, 2021.

The patent, titled “Electrical Double Layer in Nanopores for Detection and Identification of Molecules and Submolecular Units,” is assigned jointly to the University of Kentucky Research Foundation and Clemson University Research Foundation. This patent is the outcome of follow-up efforts to the earlier patent Zhang received in 2014 (US 8,860,438 B2) with the addition of new claims to the technology his group has been pursuing since then. The patented technology provides methods utilizing the double layer potential, ionic current, and mobility signals measured simultaneously from a single molecule for its structural characterization (including DNA sequencing) and an approach for multi-channel detection in which sensing modalities may be used individually or in combination.
