Shakira Hobbs Receives Two New Grants

February 06, 2020

The awards come from the Office of the Vice President for Research and the UK Center for Appalachian Research in Environmental Sciences.

Shakira Hobbs, assistant professor in the University of Kentucky Department of Civil Engineering, has received two new grant awards to further her environmental engineering research.

The first award stems from the 2019 Research Equipment Competition sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research (VPR). Following peer review, the competition committee selected 20 proposals for full or partial funding, which will result in more than $4.3 million in new equipment within the research enterprise, from a combination of VPR funds and unit-level cost-share. Hobbs’ proposal was selected for full funding.

A collaborator with several other environmental engineering researchers at UK, Hobbs demonstrated an urgent need for liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectroscopy (LC-MS/MS). Associate dean for research and graduate studies John Balk, along with department chairs Reginald Souleyrette (Department of Civil Engineering), Thomas Dziubla (Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering and Michael Montross (Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering) will serve as Co-PIs.

Additionally, the UK Center for Appalachian Research in Environmental Sciences (UK-CARES) selected Hobbs’ proposal for a Rapid Response Mini-Grant. Hobbs’ project “Estimation of Watershed Glyphosate Exports in Karst Landscapes.”

Hobbs joined the College of Engineering faculty in February 2019. You can learn more about her research here.
