Mehrana Mohtasebi receives 2020 Biomedical Engineering Society Career Development Award.

September 10, 2020

Winners are selected among a pool of international applicants including graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and early career professionals.

Mehrana Mohtasebi, a Ph.D. candidate in the F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), received the 2020 Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) Career Development Award. The BMES is the professional society for biomedical engineering and bioengineering, serving the scientific community for over 50 years. Winners are selected among a pool of international applicants including graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and early career professionals involved in research and training focused on health disparities and minority health.

Mohtasebi was selected for her outstanding work on diffuse optical mapping of brain functional connectivity using a noninvasive, noncontact, fast and high-density optical imaging system, namely, speckle contrast diffuse correlation tomography (scDCT). The innovative scDCT technique was recently invented in the Bio-photonic Laboratory led by Dr. Guoqiang Yu. The scDCT technology enables imaging of cerebral blood flow distribution and mapping cerebral functional connectivity to investigate pathophysiology and interventions of various cerebral diseases and neurological disorders, which could impact current basic neuroscience research and clinical applications.

Mohtasebi is the current president of the BMES Student Chapter at UK.

Congratulations to Mehrana!
