Engineering World Health (EWH), a new student organization in the University of Kentucky College of Engineering, received a $750 investment from GE Appliances and the college at the inaugural Shark Tank Student Organization Competition held September 6.
Nick Baumann, interim vice president of EWH, proposed a new after-school program for high school students that encourages success from failure in the iterative engineering process through hands-on learning. High school students will analyze prevalent third-world health problems and use 'frugal engineering' techniques to mimic first-world solutions. EWH members will teach and guide participants in the technical aspects of their solutions.
“EWH hopes to give students a better understanding of what engineering really is, while simultaneously working on solving major third-world health problems,” said EWH faculty advisor Babak Bazrgari, associate professor in the F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering. “If this initial program is a success, EWH hopes to expand the program to middle schools, elementary schools and alternative schools.”
